Who Are You Calling an Evangelist?

Evangelism cover

The Day My Friend Called Me

I was excited to go back to her congregation. Finally, they had a church of their own.

But when my friend said, "I want you to talk to them about being Evangelists," I said, "What? Like the guys on TV? The men in the white suits?"

Why I Was Afraid

You see, what nobody knows is that, hidden deep down inside me - in the dark, behind a locked door - lurks a tent preacher. A diamond-bearing, head-mopping, scripture-intoning Evangelist.

And I've been trying to keep him safely chained all these years.

How could I ask these people to do what I've never been willing to do - find a way to make peace with my inner Evangelist?

So I went looking around my own life. The stories I had heard. People I had known. What other ways might exist, to be an evangelist? To be someone who looks like you and me. Who speaks in a normal voice. Who shows her values, but respects others' beliefs?

How Did I Learn Faith?

Finally, I asked myself, "Where did I learn faith?" From my grandmother, first of all. From a friend who was a "soccer Dad." From a community I read about in Montana. Why? Because I watched them live their values, not spout them.

Naturally, to communicate this, I turned to stories. Family stories. My own experiences as a young mother. A Jewish tale from the Hasidic tradition. True stories from the newspaper. Even a Christian teaching tale about an abbot and a rabbi.

As I told the stories, I began to feel a change in myself. I feel more committed to living my own values and to really noticing my neighbor.

Okay, I'm still afraid of TV preachers. But watch out! I've finally let my hidden Evangelist into the world!
